Artists Statement

Through my artwork, I observe change in the environment from the perspective of my own journey and transition through life. I try to capture beauty and significance in the ordinary and illustrate the frailty of life and the sense of loss experienced through abandonment as a way of better appreciating the simplicities of life.

I study the decay of disappearing architecture in modern cityscapes looking for beauty and pattern, painting real and unimagined vistas. The search for beauty seeks to find meaning and value in what was once new, that is lost through time, disregard and circumstance. The collisions that appear in my work encapsualte the tension and present a violent image of loss, both personal and material.

My interactions with the environment are passive, I reflect the world around me and draw comparisons between past and present, new and old to form a narrative that represents change. The wasteful disregard of material items and excesses of modern living feature strongly in my work and influence my own choice and methods of practice.

Drawing upon skills learned as a commercial textile designer I produce many drawings that develop into paintings, prints and mixed media collage work. Patterns repeat, whilst colour and texture feature strongly with a near graphic quality. Influences of design, architecture and street art can be found throughout my work.
